Finding Your Personal Style

Personal Style

Today I'm going to talk about finding your own personal style. I was never always a girly girl, or was ever into fashion growing up. I was actually more of a tom boy stealing my father's shirts and wearing oversized hoodies to school everyday.

Now, being stylish doesn't need to cost a fortune, nor does it mean you have to look a certain way. It's not about slpurging on the latest designer item and it doesn't mean you have to follow a certain trend to be 'modern.' It is all about expressing who you are, and how you want to present yourself to the world and stage in front of you.

I never really got into fashion until I was out of high school. High school can be a real hard place for someone to develop their sense of style because there is a constant pressure of looking a certain way.

Getting out of high school I now have the power to express my creativity in the forms that I want without any limitations.

I always feel that if I take the time to get up and get dressed everyday, I'm in a position where I am putting my best foot forward for everyone and I'm ready to take on every challenge. Getting dressed and looking great makes me confident, makes me feel my best so I can achieve the best.

Here are my tips:

1) Love yourself.

The point of finding your style is not to transform you into what society wants, it is to make you more confident in your own skin. You need to fully accept yourself and be happy first because fashion is a form of expressive art.

2) Find ways to accentuate what you love about your body.

You know your body the best, so find ways to emphasize the great parts about it. Lets also be real here, we all have insecurities and things we may want to hide, and there are pieces and techniques to do so. Remember, fashion is about making you confidents, so you can put your best foot forward.

3) Find inspiration.

This is the fun part, I always love looking at pictures and finding inspiration in the little things in life. This is the time where you can look at blogs and read magazines and be inspired by others. I'm not really a Tumblr girl, I use We Heart It. If you have never heard of it, it is essentially like Tumblr, but slightly easier. Tumblr is a blogging platform, We Heart It is mainly for pictures and a great place to easily find inspiration.

4) Not every trend is worth following.

My biggest tip is not to follow 'all the latest trends.' Trends will go out of style, but your personality will never.

5) Pick and choose what you like.

When I go shopping, I always try to keep in mind if the piece reflects who I am or if i can wear it to showcase who I am.

6) Find colours that suit you.

There is a certain colour pallet that can compliment your skin tone, eyes and hair colour. For me, because I have black hair, an olive skin tone, and dark brown eyes, I look best in jewel tones. Therefore, I try to find richer colours like ruby reds, emerald greens, and sapphire blues.

Sometimes you like something, but it doesn't come in the colour that suits you. If you really like it, I say go for it, but you can always hold a piece against your arm to see if it will compliment your skin tone.

7) Find silhouettes that work well with your figure.

Flattering cuts will always help you in emphasizing parts you like about your body, while hiding your insecurities. (This can be a post in itself)
